LeapFrog's Leap-font Samples

by LuckyPrincess (originals by MystiK791 and JavonniNathanOtero)

Uploaded on Jul 20, 2022 (and last updated on Jul 23, 2022)

Here is a collection of samples for LeapFrog's Leap-font. You can use them to make the LeapFrog Systems Soundfont (Leap-font Wavetable Synthesis) (click here to read more about the Leap-font below on the MORE INFO section). They are ripped from the BIOS ROMs dumps. Also included are the LeapFrog BIOS dumps (2 LeapPad, 2 My First LeapPad, 1 Little Touch LeapPad, 6 Leapster). All of the instrument samples and sound effects are in 8000Hz WAV format.

Both of these are in ZIP files, so you have to open the ZIP file first and then out pop the 2 ZIP files, so you can open both of them to use them for making the LeapFrog Systems Soundfont.

If you are using the ROM dump WAV files, here's how to make the LeapFrog Leap-font (NOT the one by iusmaker777):

Resources required: Polyphone (Download polyphone: https://www.polyphone-soundfonts.com/) (THE BEST RECOMMENDATION to use with the LeapFrog ROM dump wav files or samples) or Audacity (Download Audacity: https://www.audacityteam.org/) (if you're acquiring the soundfont from an obscure console, with the Audacity raw data feature)

(OPTIONAL, for HD sounds from the BIN versions of the LeapFrog ROM Dumps: https://archive.org/details/leap-frog-rom-dumps-collection)

1 - First, use the ROM dumps (above) and extract the samples properly.

2- Import the ROMs and BIOS dumps of the games and toys (ABOVE) on Audacity or Polyphone in order to make the soundfont. For Polyphone (recommended by VEGA03 on GitHub), just be sure to upsample it to 44,100 HZ for the highest sound quality possible, and try your best with these LeapFrog BIOS Dumps to recreate loop points and envelopes as decently as you can. (If upsampling the samples is redundant process, you can leave the samples just the way they are.)

3 - All instrument namings required. Just remember, eliminate the static sounds and do not include them. For every sample with loop points, you can move either the loop's start or end by 1 sample, thus realigning it.

4 - Only include Instrument sounds in the correct banking places and Correct instrument names and 3 SFX sets. Please also match the correct registers with what you hear below. IMPORTANT: All of the instruments in the LeapFrog soundfont/Leap-font MUST sound in the same range, just like how usual General MIDI devices or soundfonts usually sound, and they MUST NOT sound at the different wrong octaves!!!

5 - When finished making the soundfont, you can upload it to Internet Archive, Google Drive or Musical Artifacts. You can also upload a "Soundfont test" on Soundcloud if you want to demonstrate your LeapFrog Systems Soundfont (Leap-font) there.

More info if you want to know what's behind it, please read the LeapFrog Leap-font wiki page below in the MORE INFO section. (I recently updated it so to include the history, the instrument list, instrument packs and GM programs and banks for instruments.)

FYI: The Leap-font is a lot more advanced, working a lot like MIDI (musical instrument digital interface). The instrument system in the Leap-font has so much more that he or she can do with it. The Leap-font has 74 instruments and supports 6 channels, which means he or she can have up to 6 instruments or multiple tracks with the same instrument playing at once. The Leap-font was used on the higher end toys (e.g. LeapPad Learning System (1999), My First LeapPad, Turbo Twist, the Leapster up until the Leapster 2) and even some cheaper ones (e.g. Learning Screen Karaoke, See and Learn Driver, Leap's Learning Band, School Time Leaptop (songs) and Fridge DJ). Also, each instrument's samples are multi-sampled, or sampled with each range having a specific sample across its specific notes.

THE STORY: When I was experimenting with MIDI files with an old soundfont made by iusmaker777 (on Musical Artifacts) I saw the big problem: I noticed the names of the samples are even wrong, and also some audio problems (ie. Instruments played long sound like the audio stops for around 0.5 seconds then plays again, and it's supposed to have multi-sampled sounds for each instruments), and sounds nothing like the examples above! So this is why I'm posting everything, the ZIP files including samples and ROM dumps, directions for making the soundfont and listening examples of the LeapFrog soundfont.

If anyone can give me ideas or make this LeapFrog Soundfont "perfectly" for me, please let me know in the comments below! It would be appreciated a lot. Thanks! :)

For now, enjoy these ROM dumps and samples for making the LeapFrog Systems Soundfont "Leap-font".

Licensing Gray Area
These files have an unknown license, were obtained from unkown sources or were compiled from third party material.
Extra considerations: Some samples may be slightly truncated or have bits of extra data in the files, but will be useable for music nonetheless (although there might be a chance to go back and fine-tune them and add loop points, but this will take awhile as there are over 250+ sounds).
